About St. Mary's, Clomel
St. Mary's, Clomel dates from 1850 and is built in the neo-Classical style. It has a cruciform plan with a five-bay nave, built of ashlar limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and a marble altar.
Notable features
Designed by J.B. Keane, the church fully encloses an earlier mass house from penal times. The interior contains a decorative high altar by George Goldie, an ornate stucco coffered ceiling, and framed paintings. Exterior details include a prostyle tetrastyle Corinthian portico with statues, a three-stage clock tower with a copper dome, and stained glass in the transept and nave windows.
