About Dublin St Catherine

Dublin St Catherine is a Church of Ireland church in Dublin, County Dublin. It is one of the churches in the parish of Core Dublin, in the Diocese of Dublin & Glendalough.

History

The church's own history records that St Catherine's, on Thomas Street, was originally built in 1185 and rebuilt in its present form in the eighteenth century by John Smyth. The site stands on what was once termed the Slí Mhór, the Great Way, a route that ran westwards across Ireland from Dublin.

The church closed in 1966 following a decrease in the size of the local congregation and was de-consecrated the following year. For a period it was used by Dublin Corporation for exhibitions and concerts. After a period of decline and a later refurbishment, St Catherine's was re-consecrated and became the congregation's place of worship in the late 1990s.
