About St. James the Great
St. James the Great was built in 1854. It has a nine-bay nave, built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and mosaic work.
Notable people
The foundation stone was laid by Daniel O’Connell, whose likeness appears in a carved stop on the front doorcase. The church records the 1916 marriage of Joseph Mary Plunkett and Grace Gifford, and retains the chalice and ciboria used at their wedding mass. The high altar and reredos were designed by G.C. Ashlin in 1897, while stained glass windows are attributed to Michael O’Connor.
