About St Alphonus, Connons
St Alphonus, Connons dates from 1844. It has a single-cell plan with a four-bay nave and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a bell tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and window tracery. The church stands in its own graveyard.
History
Designed by William Dargan, who was then an engineer working on the Ulster Canal and later became known as the Father of Irish Railways, the church was completed by Fr McClusker in 1844. It was officially opened in 1846 by John Hughes, a native of Co. Tyrone who subsequently became the first Archbishop of New York in 1850.
