About Immaculate Conception, Parish of Newtownbutler

Immaculate Conception, Parish of Newtownbutler is a Roman Catholic parish church in Enniskillen, Co. Cavan. It is part of the Clogher Diocese.

History

The Church of the Immaculate Conception was officially opened on 15 August 1897 at a cost of £5,000. The parish records that a large part of that sum was raised locally at a time when times were hard and money was scarce, and that several thousand pounds came from emigrants, particularly in the United States.

The church closed for major renovation from April 2009 until June 2012, the largest works carried out on the building since it opened. The parish estimated the cost of the project at around one million pounds. The first phase included new lime plaster inside and out, a new roof, new plumbing and electrics and a new ground floor. The second phase, completed in 2012, added an adoration church built onto the side of the main building, along with a toilet block, a committee room and a parish office. The new building was dedicated on 22 June 2012, when live streaming cameras were installed in the church.
