About Sandymount St John The Evangelist

Sandymount St John The Evangelist is a Church of Ireland church in Sandymount, County Dublin. It is in the Diocese of Dublin & Glendalough.

History

The church was founded by Sidney Herbert, brother of the Earl of Pembroke and administrator of the Pembroke and Fitzwilliam estates, and opened for worship as a trustee church in 1850. It has no parish. Since its foundation it has been known for Anglo-Catholic worship, and the congregation continues in that tradition.

The building

The church describes the building as a replica of a thirteenth-century church in Normandy, and as the only example of Neo-Norman architecture in Dublin, built at a time when Neo-Gothic was the norm. Restoration work has been completed at the east end, the west end and the tower.

Notable features

The congregation states that it has the only Stations of the Cross and monstrance within the Church of Ireland. A pew is reserved for the Earl of Pembroke. The church publishes information leaflets on its war memorial, its stained glass windows, its organ, the Armstrong mosaic, the reredos, the Stations of the Cross and the icon of St John the Evangelist.
