About Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Newcastle
Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Newcastle was built around 1870. It has a cruciform plan and rendered walls under a pitched artificial slate roof. Notable features include a bell tower, stained-glass windows and window tracery.
The building
The church possibly incorporates fabric from an earlier c. 1815 structure. Its transepts are oriented with roofs parallel to the nave, an unusual arrangement. The altar is positioned at the west end to allow the main entrance to face the roadside, reflecting nineteenth-century efforts to improve accessibility. The nave features a decoratively carved timber queen post truss roof.
