About Maghera St Lurach
Maghera St Lurach is a Church of Ireland church in Maghera, County Derry. It is in the Diocese of Derry & Raphoe.
History
The church is named after St Lurach, who founded a monastery in the sixth century, around which the settlement of Maghera developed. The parish records him as of royal descent, of the family of Colla Uais, King of Ireland, and as bishop of Derrygloran, Co. Derry, and nicknamed Lurach of the poems.
The ruins of an earlier St Lurach's Church, also known as Lowry's, date to the tenth century and stand on the site of the sixth-century monastery. The present church stands near the centre of the town.
Notable features
St Lurach's headstone has a cross-inscribed upright slab, and the earthen ramparts of his rath can be seen in the adjoining graveyard. Within the ruins of the earlier church is a sculpture of the crucifixion, thought to date from the tenth century.
