About Londonderry St Augustine
Londonderry St Augustine is a Church of Ireland church in Londonderry, County Derry. It is in the Diocese of Derry & Raphoe.
History
St Augustine's stands on the city walls of Derry and is known as the Wee Church on the Walls. The congregation describes the site as traditionally believed to be that of St Columba's first monastery.
Docwra repaired the old abbey church for the use of the early Planters, and in 1611 Lord Carew's report described the church as "well slated and repaired". The Cathedral of St Columb was completed in 1633, after which the old church became a chapel for the use of the bishops.
The church's own history records that during the Great Siege of 1689, which lasted 105 days, the building was used by the Scottish Presbyterians for worship and sustained great damage, and that the mortar shell containing the Terms of Surrender fell into the church graveyard. The church was afterwards repaired and returned to use for worship.
Notable features
A gilt chalice and paten known as the Promise Chalice were presented to the repaired church in 1613, as a token of the Honourable the Irish Society's intent to build a cathedral. The translated inscription reads "Church of God in the City of Derrie".
