About Dundalk St Nicholas
Dundalk St Nicholas was built around 1400. The church is built of rubble stone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower with a copper spire, stained-glass windows, crenellated parapets and window tracery. The church stands in its own graveyard.
The building
This Church of Ireland church has a cruciform plan with a two-bay nave, north transepts and polygonal chancel. Built c. 1400, it was extended c. 1650 and remodelled by Francis Johnston c. 1760. A baptistery occupies the north-west corner, and a three-stage bell and clock tower with a copper spire rises at the south-west. A gable-fronted porch projects from the west elevation. Walling combines uncoursed rubble stone for the tower and nave with coursed calp limestone elsewhere. Windows feature painted timber tracery with rope-motif glazing and Y-tracery. The site includes a wooded graveyard with wrought-iron railings on limestone plinths, set back from the main street.
