About Dunboe St Paul (Articlave)

Dunboe St Paul (Articlave) is a Church of Ireland church in Dunboe, County Derry. It is one of the churches in the parish of Castlerock Christ Church, in the Diocese of Derry & Raphoe.

History

St Paul's was built to replace the ruin at Downhill. It is generally believed that Articlave was the first settlement on the Clothworker Company estate, in 1611, and that its site was chosen on account of the nearby river. A Captain Jackson gave a grant of one acre of land, and the church was built on it. Bishop Hopkins gave consent for the building and Bishop King consecrated it on 2 June 1691.

On 24 June 1848 five young men were admitted to the Order of the Priesthood in the church. One of them was William Alexander, then a curate attached to Derry Cathedral, who was consecrated Bishop of Derry and Raphoe in 1867 and became Primate of All Ireland in 1896. In 1850 he married Cecil Frances Humphreys in the old Parish Church of Strabane; she was a hymn writer, and among her hymns is "There is a green hill far away".

The building

The Church of St Paul stands in Articlave, about one mile east of Castlerock. The structure is of a plain and simple type, with a square tower at the west end. The church was refurbished in 1991 to commemorate its tercentenary.

Notable features

A sundial of blue slate is set on the south wall near the door. It bears the date 1823 and the inscription "'Tis greatly wise to talk with our past hours, and ask them what report they bore to heav'n."
