About Church of the Sacred Heart, Oola
Church of the Sacred Heart, Oola was built in 1838. It has a four-bay nave and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, a marble altar and window tracery.
The building
The church features a freestanding gable-fronted bell tower to the east with a cast-iron bell. This absence of an attached spire is an interesting historical reminder of pre-Emancipation times when non-Established churches were apparently not permitted to have a bell for worship. The site is enclosed by roughcast rendered boundary walls with render copings and plinths.
