About Church of the Immaculate Conception, Terryglass
Church of the Immaculate Conception, Terryglass was built between 1880 and 1884. It has a cruciform plan with a four-bay nave, built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a four-stage tower with a broach spire, stained-glass windows and lancet windows.
Notable people
The church was erected to designs by Daniel O'Connell of Derrynane Abbey. It is apparently a memorial to Dona Lucila Hickie, the Spanish-born wife of Lieutenant-Colonel James Francis Hickie, who died in 1880. The tower was designed by Fuller and Jermyn of Dublin and completed in 1929 under the supervision of Manuel Domingo Hickie. Stained glass within is attributed to Franz Mayer and Company of Munich and London.
