About Church of the Assumption, Walshestown
Church of the Assumption, Walshestown was built around 1828. The church has rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and a marble altar.
The building
This four-bay hall-type church was renovated c.1880 and received a single-storey extension c.1990, with a cut stone dedication plaque recording A W Mc Guire P.P. 1828. The grounds feature an ashlar limestone boundary wall, gate piers and a freestanding campanile in the western graveyard, alongside a bullaun stone and octagonal medieval font probably moved from a nearby medieval church. Restrictions on non-established churches before Emancipation prevented an attached belfry.
