About Church of St. John the Baptist, Newcestown
Church of St. John the Baptist, Newcestown dates from 1872 and is built in the Gothic Revival style. It has a cruciform plan with a four-bay nave, built of squared sandstone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a four-stage bell tower, stained glass including a rose window, an internal gallery and a marble altar. The church stands in its own graveyard.
The building
The building is a freestanding Roman Catholic church featuring a gable-fronted double-height structure with single-bay transepts and a canted chancel. Its snecked sandstone walls are topped with carved limestone eaves courses, corbels, and wrought-iron ridge cresting. The interior contains a scissors braced timber roof, lead-lined quarry-glazing, and marble side altars within the transepts.
