About Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles
Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles was built between 1860 and 1865. The church is built of ashlar limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a seven-stage bell tower, stained glass including a rose window and buttressed walls.
The building
The detached gable-fronted cathedral follows a three-bay Latin cross plan and exhibits a North Italian Romanesque style. The exterior was designed by J.J. McCarthy, while George Ashlin completed the interior, which features a late sixteenth-century Italian marble tabernacle said to have been designed by Giacomo della Porta. The structure stands on the site of a medieval Carmelite priory.
