About Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Felim, Cavan
Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Felim, Cavan was built between 1939 and 1942 in the neo-Classical style. It has a seven-bay nave, built of ashlar granite under a pitched copper roof. Notable features include a four-stage tower with an octagonal spire, stained-glass windows, carved Stations of the Cross and buttressed walls. It was designed by Ralph Byrne.
History
The cathedral replaced an earlier church of 1823 that was promoted to cathedral status c.1850. Construction was carried out by John Sisk and Sons Ltd on an elevated site along Farnham Street. The earlier structure was dismantled in 1942 and rebuilt in the parish of Castletara.
