Aughnagower Aasleagh S John The Baptist was built between 1850 and 1855. It has a six-bay nave, built of rubble limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a bellcote, window tracery and lancet windows.
History
The church was begun in 1851 and consecrated in 1854. Its design is attributable to Joseph Welland, Architect to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. It replaced earlier makeshift accommodations in nearby Aasleagh where the congregation previously assembled in a hall and porch. The building stands as part of an ecclesiastical ensemble alongside an adjacent rectory in Co. Mayo.
