About All Saints Newtowncunningham

All Saints Newtowncunningham was built in 1722. It has a four-bay nave and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a four-stage tower, window tracery and buttressed walls.

History

Originally a chapel of ease to Taughboyne, the church was consecrated in 1722 but apparently not opened until 1728. It was extended in 1808 with a tower built by William Forward, later third Earl of Wicklow. The interior was refitted in 1846 by Joseph Welland, and an apsidal chancel was added c. 1896 or 1910. A timber lychgate, dedicated to the Revd. A. G. Stuart, was erected in 1920.
