About Taney St Nahi
Taney St Nahi is a Church of Ireland church in Taney, County Dublin. It is one of the churches in the parish of Taney Christ Church (Dundrum), in the Diocese of Dublin & Glendalough.
History
St Nahi's stands on the original site of Dundrum parish church, where official records indicate a church was built about 800 AD, probably on the ruins of a still older building. It is dedicated to St Nathy, or Nahi, a saint of the early Irish church who is thought to have lived in a monastery at Churchtown about 600 AD. The church was rebuilt in 950, in 1650 and again in 1750.
The present church was erected in the middle of the eighteenth century through the efforts of Dr Isaac Mann, then Archdeacon of Dublin, and his curate the Revd Jeremy Walsh. It was consecrated on 8 June 1760 by Richard Robinson, Bishop of Ferns and Leighlin, who later became Primate, and the following year it was used by the Bishop of Limerick for the ordination of priests. It was designed as a simple rectangular box shape. A restoration was completed in 1910.
As the building became too small for the parishioners, a vestry meeting in June 1809 decided to build a new church on a site nearby, and Christ Church opened in 1818. St Nahi's appears to have been closed for public worship for much of the remainder of that century.
Notable features
The font in the Baptistry was moved from St Kevin's Church and is the one in which Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington, was baptised on 30 April 1769. The Baptistry window, whose central panel portrays the Annunciation, is by Evie Hone; it was completed in 1926 and placed in its present position in 1933.
Most of the stained glass is the work of artists of an Túr Gloine, the Tower of Glass. Catherine O'Brien made five of the windows between 1914 and 1947, among them I am the Resurrection and the Life on the east wall. Alfred Ernest Child made The Sermon on the Mount on the south wall in 1929, and Ethel Rhind made Praise the Lord, also on the south wall, in 1916.
The needlework pictures behind the Holy Table are the work of the Misses Yeats, sisters of the poet W.B. Yeats.
