About Taney Christ Church (Dundrum)

Taney Christ Church (Dundrum) is a Church of Ireland church in Taney, County Dublin. It is in the Diocese of Dublin & Glendalough.

History

Worship in the parish of Taney is traced to the seventh century, when tradition holds that St Nahi established a centre for monastic life on the site of the old St Nahi's Church at Dundrum. By the mid twelfth century Taney was a rural see, which later became the rural deanery of Taney. After the Anglo-Norman conquest of 1172 the church and its surrounding lands were assigned to the See of Dublin, and Taney shortly afterwards became a prebend of St Patrick's Cathedral. The earliest original parish records, held in the Library of the Representative Church Body, date from 1791.

As the parish grew the older church proved too small, and discussions on replacing it had begun as early as 1809. At a vestry meeting in June 1809 it was decided to build a new church on a site near the old one. Christ Church was completed and opened for worship in June 1818, though it was not fully consecrated until 1872.

In 1859 services began in a room in Mount Merrion, and the parish's third church, St Thomas', was built there in 1874. St Thomas' became a separate parish in 1956 and amalgamated with Booterstown in the 1990s.
