History

The parish of Cloghan and Banagher is known also as Gallen and Rynagh, and the parish history names St Canoc and St Rynagh as its early founders. St Canoc came from Wales. St Rynagh is recorded as a sister of St Finnian and is thought to have moved from Clonard to Clonmacnois before coming to Banagher as abbess of a religious house; after her death in about 563 her mother Talacia took charge.
