About St. Ruadhan’s Church, Kilruane
St. Ruadhan’s Church, Kilruane is a Roman Catholic parish church in Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary. It is part of the Killaloe Diocese.
History
The church was constructed some time between 1838 and 1840. Tradition holds that it replaced a Penal-era mass house in the locality that was flattened during the Night of the Big Wind.
The altar and reredos were constructed and installed about 1900 by James Pearse, father of Patrick Pearse. In 1976 the building was extensively renovated and the sanctuary reordered. Several blocked-up doors and windows were discovered in the course of the works, suggesting that the building had been used for some other purpose before being converted to a church.
The building
St Ruadhan's Church at Kilruane is a small cruciform building. A bell that once called workers from the nearby Toler estate to their meals was installed in the belfry.
Notable features
The stained glass windows and the Stations of the Cross are by Mayer of Munich. The paschal candle and the sanctuary lamp pedestal are carved from bog oak by local people and were donated to the church.
