About St Pius X

St Pius X is a Catholic church in the parish of Moville, Diocese of Derry. The diocese lists a Saturday vigil Mass at 19:00 and Sunday Mass at 10:00, 12:00. Rev Colm O'Doherty is the parish priest.

History

The parish records that Moville's Catholics used the Convent Chapel as their principal place of worship through the first half of the twentieth century.

Plans for a new church were drawn up in 1954 by the Derry architects Fitzpatrick and Devine. Building had been under way for well over a year when the foundation stone was laid on the Feast of Christ the King, 28 October 1956, by Bishop Farren, the architect Malachy Fitzpatrick handing him the trowel for the ceremony. The town was decorated with bunting and flags for the occasion, which was reported in several editions of the Derry Journal, and the church choir sang Veni Creator. The contract for the work went to a Moville builder and furniture contractor, and the church was completed in just over three years.

The site was confined, bounded by the road at the front, the parochial house on one side and the convent on the other. The church is dedicated to Pope Pius X, who was canonised in 1954.
