About St Patrick’s

St Patrick’s is a Catholic church in the parish of Iskaheen, Diocese of Derry. The diocese lists Sunday Mass at 09:00. Very Rev John Farren is the parish priest.

History

The parish's own history records that Patrick came to Iskaheen in 443, converted the people and baptised Eoghan, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages, and that Eoghan was buried at Iskaheen in 465.

The parish dates the church to 1782 and describes it as one of the oldest churches in the Diocese of Derry still in use. Iskaheen was part of the parish of Templemore until 1811. From 1832 it was joined with Inch and Burt, which became independent again in 1847 and later joined Fahan. Upper Moville, which then consisted of about 80 families, was added to the parish in 1902.

Notable features

The first parish priest of Iskaheen, Rev William McLaughlin, is recorded as having blessed the head and eye wells at Iskaheen. He was born at Aught, Ture in 1776 and ordained in 1806, served as parish priest from 1811 to 1836 and again from 1848 to 1856, and died on 16 July 1856. He is buried at Iskaheen.
