About St. Mary
St. Mary was built between 1858 and 1874. The church is built of squared stone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, a bellcote and an internal gallery.
The building
Designed by local architect John Murray, the cruciform-plan church features squared-and-snecked rubble stone walling with tooled granite plinths. The south gable includes a bellcote, pinnacles, and a trefoil window, while the interior contains a painted timber panelled gallery and an arched brace roof on stone corbels. The structure is enclosed by a low random rubble boundary wall with cast-iron finials.
