History

Tydavnet appears as a parish of the Diocese of Clogher, in the Deanery of Clones, in the list of parishes as they stood by the early fourteenth century.

The church is dedicated to St Davnet, also known as St Dympna, secondary patron of the diocese. The diocese records that she lived at Sliabh Beagh in this parish during the sixth century, that she is patron of those suffering from mental illness, and that she is associated with several other places including Lavey in Co. Cavan and Gheel in Belgium. A holy well dedicated to her stands at Caldavnet in the parish. Her feast day is 15 May.
