About SS. Peter and Paul’s Church, Horseleap
SS. Peter and Paul’s Church, Horseleap is a Roman Catholic parish church in Horseleap, Co. Westmeath. It is part of the Meath Diocese.
History
The first church on record in the area was St David's Church, Ardnurcher, Horseleap, dated by the parish to 1400 and head of a rural deanery. It was taken over by the Church of Ireland during the Reformation, returned to the Catholic diocese in 1682 or 1685, and at a later date reverted to the Church of Ireland. A mudwalled church was built at Horseleap in 1780.
A church described as a plain building was erected at Horseleap in 1809 and renovated in 1850. It was dedicated to Sts Peter and Paul in 1865, and a bell tower was built at it in 1935. The last Mass was celebrated in that church on 28 June 1964 and it was demolished the following day.
The foundation stone for the present church was laid by Bishop Kyne on 26 March 1965, and the building was consecrated and dedicated by him on 5 September of the same year. The total cost was £35,829 10s 9d.
