About Our Lady of Good Counsel

Our Lady of Good Counsel is a Roman Catholic parish church in Ballyboden, Co. Dublin. It is part of the Dublin Archdiocese.

History

The Ballyboden area was originally part of the parish of Rathfarnham, which goes back to pre-Reformation times. Terenure was the first parish to separate from Rathfarnham, in 1894, and the increase in population in the Rathfarnham area from the 1960s brought a further series of separations: Churchtown in 1965, Ballyroan in 1968, then Tallaght and Ballyboden in 1972.

The Augustinian Order, whose association with Ballyboden began with the purchase of Orlagh in 1872, was asked in 1973 to take charge of the newly formed parish. Parish services were held at first in the Augustinian student residence on Taylors Lane, and the parish then built its own church, dedicated to Our Lady of Good Counsel, which was opened and blessed by Archbishop Ryan on 4 October 1981. A refurbishment of the sanctuary and interior was completed in 2013.

Notable features

The holy water font beside the main entrance came from the Augustinian abbey at Tullow, Co. Carlow, which was founded around 1300; it was kept by the Gahan family before being presented to the parish. The bell in the belfry was originally in the church of Santa Maria in Posterula in Rome and bears the date 1612 together with the name of the reigning pope, Paul the Fifth.

The church contains five stained glass panels by Desmond Carrick, who lived on Killakee Road from the late 1950s until his death in 2012. They are titled 'Resurrection', 'Mother and Child', 'Crucifixion', 'Crown of Thorns' and 'Jesus is taken down from the Cross', and all were made about 1965.
