About Mourne Presbyterian Church
Mourne Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland in Newry, County Down.
History
The congregation was established on 21 July 1696, when Charles Wallace was ordained in a small church at Ballymageough, Kilkeel. The church's own history records a limited influx of Presbyterians into some townlands in Mourne after the accession of Charles II in 1660, with numbers increasing steadily after 1691 until by 1696 they were sufficient to support a church.
As attendance grew the building had to be enlarged, and in 1831 the church was moved to its present site on Greencastle Street. The congregation records nine ministers over its first 219 years. A history of the congregation, The Big Meeting, was written by H. S. Irvine for its tricentenary.
