About Mountcharles Christ Church

Mountcharles Christ Church was built between 1859 and 1861. The church is built of squared sandstone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a bellcote, buttressed walls and lancet windows. It was designed by Joseph Welland.

The building

This Church of Ireland church in Mountcharles, Co. Donegal, was designed by Joseph Welland, who served the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from c. 1843. The structure features a three-bay hall with a stepped bellcote, a shallow chancel, and a projecting porch. It is constructed of local sandstone with detailed cut stone work, including fluer-de-lys finials and diamond-pane windows. The snecked masonry of the chancel may indicate it was added later. The site includes a boundary wall and gateway, and stands near a former rectory.
