About Midleton St John The Baptist

Midleton St John The Baptist was built in 1823. It has a three-bay nave, built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower with a spire, stained-glass windows, crenellated parapets and pinnacles.

The building

Designed by the Pain brothers in the English Gothic style, this Church of Ireland church was funded by the Board of First Fruits and features snecked limestone walls with buttresses and flanking crenellated porches to the north and south elevations. Architectural details include pointed arch openings with limestone hood mouldings, tripartite lancet windows with Y-tracery, and an oculus with a multifoil window to the rear. The site contains rubble limestone boundary walls, carved piers with cast-iron gates, and grave markers with mausoleums.
