St James's is one of three churches in the Mallow Union of Parishes, the others being St Mary's, Castletownroche and St Mary's, Doneraile. The area served by the union runs west to the Kerry border, taking in Kanturk, Millstreet and Newmarket, east towards the River Awbeg, and north through Buttevant and Charleville.
