About Holy Family
Holy Family is a Catholic church in the parish of Ballymagroarty, Diocese of Derry. The diocese lists a Saturday vigil Mass at 18:00 and Sunday Mass at 09:30, 11:00, 12:30. Rev Joseph Gormley is the parish priest.
History
The Church of the Holy Family stands at the end of the Ballymagroarty estate, close to the local primary school, shopping centre and restaurant. It was designed and built by Hegarty Masterson Doherty Architects and McCormick Building Contractors, and was opened and solemnly dedicated on 25 September 1983.
The building
The church seats 650. The seating is arranged in a semi-circle and the inside ceiling is panelled in red wood. There are 14 windows, each of which has a Station of the Cross as its centre piece. The roof rises to its highest point over the sanctuary and is finished with a glass-reinforced plastic fleche.
Adjoining the church is a two-storey parochial house, its steel-framed brick piers formed around steel columns on the perimeter of the building and its roof rising to a central roof-light over the staircase. The land around the church has been landscaped and planted.
