About Duiske Abbey
Duiske Abbey was built between 1200 and 1215. It has a cruciform plan with a six-bay nave, built of rubble stone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a bell tower, stained glass including a rose window, crenellated parapets and pinnacles.
History
Founded 1204-12 by William The Elder Marshall, Earl of Pembroke, for the Cistercian order. Dissolved in 1536, the abbey lay in ruins before being reconstructed in 1812 for use as a church. A comprehensive restoration occurred between 1974 and 1980. The grounds contain a graveyard with cut-stone markers from before 1536 to the present and a gateway built in 1812.
