About Church of St. Brigid, Milltown
Church of St. Brigid, Milltown is a Roman Catholic parish church in Milltown, Co. Kildare. It is part of the Kildare and Leighlin Diocese.
History
The present church was erected in 1817 as a chapel of ease. An inserted tablet records that it was built by the Rev. John Lawler, parish priest, and by the subscription of the faithful. Lawlor, who also erected the teacher's residence, was Parish Priest of Allen from 1802 to 1830 and was a native of Morristown in the parish of Monasterevan.
The church was renovated and reroofed in 1961, and underwent major renovation in 2007 and 2008. A portion of the east gable of an older chapel of the penal era still stands near the church, and an older church at Milltown or Ballymuillen is mentioned in Dr McGeoghegan's list of churches.
Notable people
Two priests are interred in the church: the Rev. Patrick Kelly, who died on 22 June 1837 aged 26, and the Rev. Joseph Fitzgerald, who died on 22 February 1853 aged 29.
