About Christ the King
Christ the King is a Roman Catholic parish church in Limerick, Co. Limerick. It is part of the Limerick Diocese.
History
Caherdavin, some two miles from Limerick city, began to grow with a housing estate built in the early 1960s. The area formed part of the parish of the Holy Rosary on the Ennis Road, which had itself begun as an extension of St Munchin's parish in Thomondgate. As the population grew the residents sought somewhere local to celebrate Mass, and a residents' association formed in 1965 applied to the bishop for the area to be made a parish. Caherdavin parish was established on 22 April 1970.
The congregation used five locations in 15 years. A temporary church, with only a Sunday Mass, was set up in the Jetland ballroom, and the Na Piarsaigh GAA club, the girls' school hall and a temporary prefabricated church served in turn before the present building. The parish priest of St Munchin's had bought a centrally placed section of land in Caherdavin, later extended to take in the parish church, a convent, primary schools for girls and boys, a pitch and putt course, a credit union, a scout hall and parking areas. A 1,000 club and other fundraising activities were organised, though the main source was offertory collection envelopes, and the £571,000 needed to build the church was raised.
The building
Christ the King Church was modelled on the ideas of the Second Vatican Council and was designed by the architects John and Nuala Kernan. It was opened and blessed on 27 September 1985 by the Bishop of Limerick.
The tabernacle, the altar and ambo, the hanging cross and the baptismal font were designed by a priest of Glenstal who was also a silversmith. Chris Ryan designed the statue of Mary with the infant Jesus in her arms, and his daughter designed the stained glass windows depicting the story of creation. A space for the adoration of the Eucharist was allowed for in the original design and was completed as a Blessed Sacrament chapel in 2002.
