About Cathedral of the Assumption
Cathedral of the Assumption was built between 1827 and 1831. It has a cruciform plan with a five-bay nave, built of ashlar limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and carved Stations of the Cross.
The building
Designed by Dominick Madden in a fourteenth-century Gothic style, the cathedral features ashlar limestone walls with square-plan clasping buttresses topped by crocketed pinnacles. The interior is defined by slender octagonal columns supporting elaborate ribbed vaulting with human head and vegetal bosses. Pointed windows throughout have chamfered surrounds and hood-mouldings, while the east window displays elaborate tracery.
