About Carrickmacross St Fin Barre (Magheross)
Carrickmacross St Fin Barre (Magheross) is a Church of Ireland church in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan. It is in the Diocese of Clogher.
History
The area covered by Carrickmacross and the parishes of Donaghmoyne, Inniskeen, Killany, Magheracloone and Ardragh corresponds roughly to the district known in ancient times as Farney, an anglicised form of Fernmag, the plain of the alder. Farney was one of the five tuath, or petty kingdoms, of Monaghan, which the Norman invaders incorporated into their administrative system as baronies.
Older parish records are not held locally, having been deposited with the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin.
Notable features
The parish graveyard, known as God's Acre, lies on the Dundalk road on the town side of the southern access roundabout. The parish has compiled a map of the graveyard and an index of headstone and church record information for those buried there.
