About Belfast St George

Belfast St George is a Church of Ireland church in Belfast, County Antrim. It is in the Diocese of Connor.

History

The parish's own history records that a small chapel known as the Chapel of the Ford stood on this site more than 700 years ago, serving pilgrims waiting to cross the sandy ford on the River Farset from which Belfast takes its name, Béal Feirste, meaning mouth of the sand-bank ford.

By 1613, when Belfast received its royal charter, the parish records that the chapel had become the town's first parish church, known as the Corporation Church. A church has stood on the spot through the centuries since.

Notable features

The church's own history recounts that in 1690 King William of Orange paused here on his way to the Battle of the Boyne, and that a sermon entitled "Arise Great King" was preached in his presence within the walls of the church.

The organ was installed in the nineteenth century and has been enhanced since.
