About Athlone St Mary
Athlone St Mary was built around 1827. It has a three-bay nave under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a four-stage tower, stained-glass windows, crenellated parapets and pinnacles.
History
The church was built to designs by a Mr Richards. Its polygonal chancel was added around 1869 to a design by J. Rawson Carroll. The present building replaced earlier churches on the site dating back to 1452; the tower of a predecessor built about 1622 also survives nearby.
