About St Patrick's Church, Bryansford
St Patrick's Church, Bryansford is a Roman Catholic parish church in Bryansford, Co. Down. It is part of the Down and Connor Diocese.
History
The parish of Maghera describes itself as part of a faith community founded in the sixth century by St Donard, a follower of St Patrick, who built a church at Rath Muirbuilc, later called Maghera, at the foot of the mountain near the sea and kept an oratory on the summit. His death is given as 507.
According to Fr James O'Laverty, Mass was celebrated in a bohog at Cross, in the townland of Tullyree in the neighbouring parish of Kilcoo, and at Burren-Rock, before the erection of the old chapel at Bryansford or Ballyhafry in or around 1760.
The church in its present form has stood on its site at Ballyhafry Road since 1830. It was re-opened on Palm Sunday 2010 following extensive refurbishment.
