About St Michael’s Church
St Michael’s Church dates from 1931. It has a cruciform plan, built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage bell tower and stained-glass windows.
Notable people
The church is also known as the Father Michael Griffin Memorial Church. It commemorates the Gorteen-born Reverend Michael Griffin (1892-1920), who was apparently murdered on 14th November 1920 during the Irish War of Independence. The building serves as a memorial to this local figure.
