About St. Mary's, Waterloo
St. Mary's, Waterloo was built between 1815 and 1817. It has a cruciform plan with a two-bay nave and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, mosaic work and a marble altar.
The building
This Gothic Revival church was remodelled and extended in 1857, reflecting the post-emancipation confidence of the local Catholic community. The structure features a cruciform plan with a double-height nave and transepts, capped by a pitched slate roof with carved stone cross finials. Exterior details include dressed limestone quoins, recessed quatrefoil motifs, and a decorative tiled mosaic oval panel over the door. Inside, a carved marble reredos stands behind the altar, while a limestone font dated 1857 is set into the wall near the entrance.
