About St Mary’s, Maguiresbridge
St Mary’s, Maguiresbridge is a Catholic church in the parish of Lisnaskea-Maguiresbridge (Aghalurcher), Diocese of Clogher. The diocese lists Sunday Mass at 10:00. Very Rev Canon Jimmy McPhillips is the parish priest.
History
The parish name Aghalurcher means the field of the cast, and the parish connects it with a legend of St Ronan, who sought a site for a church by casting a stone from a sling so that it could be built where the stone fell. The ruins of St Ronan's church and the cemetery he founded stand at Aghalurcher, which the parish records as the first place in the Lisnaskea area where Christians worshipped and as dating back possibly as far as the seventh century.
St Mary's was built in the early part of the 1800s and became the main parish church. Maguiresbridge was the official name of the parish until it reverted to Aghalurcher in 1955.
