About St. Mary's

St. Mary's is a Roman Catholic church in Collinstown, Co. Westmeath, in the parish of Collinstown - Fore, Diocese of Meath. The parish address is Parochial House, Collinstown, Co. Westmeath. The diocese lists Very Rev. Martin Carley as parish priest.

Notable features

The church holds a half-sized replica of the Lough Lene bell. The original, a bronze bell, was found on Castle Island in Lough Lene in 1881 by a boy who was out searching for eels, and was sold by him to the Royal Irish Academy; it is now in the National Museum. It carries a faint outline of a cross on each side within an ornamental border, and closely resembles two mid seventh-century bells found at Bangor, Co. Down and at Cashel, the three being believed to have come from the same foundry. The local history suggests it may have belonged to St Feichín of Fore, who lived in the mid seventh century.

A second replica was presented to Dáil Éireann in 1931 by the widow of Major Bryan Cooper, a former member of the house, and is used as the Ceann Comhairle's bell. Further copies are held in the Cathedral Museum in Mullingar and in St Fechin's Church, Fore.
