About St James' Church
St James' Church is one of 4 churches in the Parish of Glenavy and Killead in the Diocese of Down & Connor.
History
The parish history records that Catholics in the Aldergrove area worshipped at a mass house at the end of the Diamond Road at the close of the seventeenth century, and later gathered for Mass at a storehouse in Ballyginniff.
In 1815 Fr Crangle had a small chapel built at Aldergrove, in the townland of Ballyquillan. Enlarged and altered by Fr Mac Mullan at some point between 1838 and 1841, that building forms the present Church of St James.
In 1876 a house standing in the grounds of the church opened as a school. It was replaced in April 1958 by a new school under the patronage of St James on the Diamond Road, which closed in 1988 when its pupils and staff transferred to St Joseph's in Crumlin.
