About St Eugene’s, Moneyneena
St Eugene’s, Moneyneena is a Catholic church in the parish of Ballinascreen, Diocese of Derry. The diocese lists Sunday Mass at 12:00. Rev Peter Madden is the parish priest.
History
The parish history records that Dean Murphy built the first Church of St Eugene at Moneyneena in 1814, four years after he replaced the dilapidated White Water Chapel with a new chapel on the same site.
With the new church in use, the earlier chapel at Kielt's corner, built in 1744 and known as the Congregation of the Monument, was allowed to fall into disrepair and has since disappeared.
Notable features
Local tradition holds that the site was chosen after a funeral travelling from the Cloane area to the graveyard at Moneyconey was halted by snow and ice on the last hill up to the Moneyneena Road. The coffin was lifted into Ambrose Kelly's field to await a second attempt, which also failed, and the burial was made there. The field became a graveyard and later the site of the church, and the steep hill came to be known as Ambrose' brae.
