About St. Colmcille

St. Colmcille is a Roman Catholic parish church in Holywood, Co. Antrim. It is part of the Down and Connor Diocese.

History

Holywood is recorded as an early ecclesiastical site and was known in the middle ages as Sanctus Boscus, the Holy Wood. In 1866 Holywood became a parish in its own right.

The parish records that the foundation stone of the original church was brought from the ruins of the church at Gartan, Co. Donegal, the birthplace of St Colmcille. It was laid on 28 July 1872 and the building was dedicated by Bishop Dorrian on 14 June 1874. That church served the parish for the next 115 years, until it was destroyed by fire in the early hours of 24 August 1989.

The spire and bell tower of the original church were restored, and a new church was solemnly dedicated by Bishop Patrick Walsh on 28 May 1995.
