About Sion Mills Baptist Church

Sion Mills Baptist Church is a Baptist church in Strabane, County Tyrone, a member of the Association of Baptist Churches in Ireland.

History

The congregation's own history traces its beginnings to open air meetings held in the village by the Londonderry church during the 1960s, and to a group of recent converts from a mission in the Glentimon Orange Hall who met for Bible study in homes in the area. Support came from Omagh Baptist Church, whose pastor at that time was J C Henry.

Prayer meetings began in a house in Strabane in November 1970, followed by a regular Sunday afternoon service in Strabane Orange Hall, the only building made available to the group. A site for a tent mission was offered in a field at Liggartown, on the edge of Sion Mills, and the focus of the work moved from Strabane to Sion Mills.
